Groups are invited to choose one of the following two formulas:
• Formula 1: show + 1 workshop (2 hours)
• Formula 2: show + 2 workshops (2½ hours)
Play-and-learn show
Based on research into the games, the play-andlearn show gives an interactive presentation of the various costumes and characters of the Roman theatre during the Early Roman Empire (period of the Roman Theatre of Orange). The children dress up and act out sketches with the show organisers. The educational aim is to show how important theatre was during the Roman Empire, not just as entertainment, but also as a social link between the diverse peoples who made up the Empire.
Educational workshops
The 6 workshops on offer, led by specialists in ancient History, are based on the school curriculum. Groups can choose 1 or 2 workshops to make up their educational formula:
• Oil lamp: each pupil makes a small oil lamp, inspired by archaeological findings, and can take their creation home.
• Writing: pupils are introduced to the art of calligraphy through various media and tools (clay tablet with wedge-shaped writing instrument, wax tablet with stylus, etc.)
• Mosaic: history of the different techniques used by the Romans, followed by the making of a mosaic by the pupils.
• Masks: pupils make a Roman theatrical mask based on iconographic research. They then work on the various characteristics of the masks. Equivalent of 2 workshops (formula 2).
• Olympic sports workshop: have a go at the Ancient Olympic sports: fist fighting, wrestling. The pupils participate in their own discovery of the fascinating world of ancient sports.
• Roman and Gallic weapons: the typical weapons of the Roman legionnaire and the Gallic warrior are presented to the pupils who can dress up in them and try them out. Through playing they learn the technique of the weapons used during wartime, but also during reconstructions of battles in the amphitheatres, theatres and circuses: pezomachia (team fighting) and naumachia (sea fighting).
To help teachers prepare their visit to the Theatre, we have created an education pack. It contains:
• A reference book: a work published by connaissance des Arts on the Roman Theatre of Orange, which presents the history of the monument illustrated with numerous photos.
• A teaching pack : an information booklet for teacher and a quiz for pupils (2 new packs : 6-11 years and 12-17 years).
• An Activity book (for groups of 3 pupils) allowing them to learn as they play.
• A certificate for the team that wins the Activity book.
